Comte Louis de Lauriston 20 Ans Calvados Domfrontais
Comte Louis de Lauriston 20 Ans is a blend of Calvados Domfrontais aged at least 20 years in the Domfront cellars of the Chais du Verger Normand, founded in 1962 by Count Louis de Lauriston and run with Christian Drouin since 1992. Domfrontais is the smallest Calvados appellation, about 1% of production, built on a minimum of 30% perry pears grown on schist and granite soils; the fruit is grated and pressed in jute bags, fermented slowly in wooden casks through the winter and distilled in a single pass through a column still. Ageing takes place in old, mostly small oak casks that leave the fruit intact, and the blend is bottled at 42% ABV. The producer describes a deep golden colour with copper and amber tints, a complex nose of jammy fruit, spice and exotic wood, and a dry, lively palate with fruit in the foreground and a spicy, powerful finish, recommending it for the end of a meal. Awards include Silver at the Concours Agricole de Paris 2022, a Vinalie Prize at the Vinalies Nationales 2016, Gold from Gilbert & Gaillard 2016, Gold at Vimoutiers 2008 and Silver at IWSC London 2006.
