Contraluz Cristalino Mezcal
Contraluz bills itself as the first cristalino mezcal, a brand from Casa Lumbre, the Mexico-based spirits company co-founded by Iván Saldaña, with the singer Maluma on board as a partner. It is made from 100% espadín agave harvested around Tlacolula and the Valles Centrales of Oaxaca and produced under NOM 0649X. The process starts the traditional mezcal way: the piñas are roasted in underground stone ovens, ground to release their sugars, and fermented for up to ten days before double distillation in copper pot stills. The spirit then spends about six months in charred American oak barrels, and afterward is filtered through activated charcoal, which strips out the color the barrel added while leaving the aromatic backbone intact. It is bottled at 40% ABV. The brand's own notes describe green and cooked agave with orange and lemon peel and blossom on the nose, plus subtler vanilla, cedar, honey and dried fruit; the palate is balanced, with cooked agave, vanilla, clove and cacao, a light smoke and a sweet, long finish. The dark crystal bottle is textured to echo the surface of an agave piña.
