Cotton Hollow 4 Year Old Straight Rye Whiskey comes from Cotton Hollow Distilling, the small-batch brand founded by Darren Lincoln and based in Bardstown, Kentucky, with a simple mission: bottle bourbons and ryes unfiltered, at high proof, in small runs. The brand launched in 2013 when its first bourbon release sold out in Texas within two months, and the rye follows the same playbook.
This is a four-year-old straight rye made from a high-rye mash bill balanced with a small amount of malted barley, aged in new charred oak and bottled at 101 proof (50.5% ABV). Rather than cutting the whiskey down with water, Cotton Hollow lets natural evaporation in the barrel concentrate the flavor, then hand-bottles each batch without chill filtration. The result leans into rye's peppery grain character with the vanilla and caramel that four years in fresh oak bring along. At this proof it stands up well in a Manhattan or a Sazerac and still sips comfortably neat.
