Creyente Azul Cristalino Añejo Mezcal
Creyente is the Oaxacan mezcal brand launched by José Cuervo in 2016 and distributed by Proximo Spirits, produced under NOM-O220X. Despite the name, Azul refers to the blue glass bottle, not blue agave: there's no blue Weber in it. This is an ensamble of two Oaxacan agaves, Espadín (Agave angustifolia) and Cuishe (Agave karwinskii), and it's made the traditional way. The piñas are roasted in underground pits, crushed with a tahona stone wheel, fermented traditionally, and double distilled in copper pot stills. The mezcal is then aged as an añejo in new American oak casks, and the color the barrels add is filtered out before bottling to make it a cristalino, clear in the glass but carrying the oak's sweeter, rounder character. Tastings.com's review describes aromas of vanilla, smoked butter cream frosting, bananas foster and toasted fruity cereal, with candy corn, smoked banana, lime and marshmallow on the palate and a tingling, dry, medium-length finish, calling it a wild flavor for friends who don't like traditional mezcal. It's a soft, dessert-leaning, lightly smoky mezcal that sits between añejo tequila and the smokier Oaxacan style, good neat or over a large cube.
