Crown Royal 29 Year Old was, when it launched in November 2022, the oldest whisky Crown Royal had ever released, a one-time limited edition of just 6,000 bottles. It's a blended Canadian whisky made at the brand's distillery in Gimli, Manitoba, and every component in the blend has been aged for no less than twenty-nine years in American oak. Crown Royal built it around its signature rye mash bill; the brand's Stephen Wilson described it as representing the robust history of the Gimli distillery, and the long aging is balanced against the full-flavored spice that Canadian rye grain brings. It's bottled at 46% ABV, a few points above the standard Crown Royal lineup, which gives the old whisky more weight and texture in the glass. Crown Royal's official notes put baking spices, subtle orchard fruit and toasted oak on the nose; rye spice, more baking spice, orchard fruit, robust licorice and a touch of vanilla on the palate; and a finish that is rich and robust yet balanced and a little sweet, exceptionally long and warming. Distribution was limited to a short list of states, and with only 6,000 bottles made, it's a whisky to open for a real milestone.
