Deadhead comes encased in a plastic shell sculpted as a tsantsa — a shrunken head — designed by artist Rodney "Odd Rodney" McLellan, with the hair forming the neck and the cap doubling as a shot glass. The tribute is to the Shuar, an indigenous people of the Amazon believed never to have been conquered, who took tsantsas from vanquished enemies in the belief that the soul remained within. The rum inside is Mexican, made from sugarcane grown on the company's own farms in the jungles of Chiapas, blending molasses and fresh cane juice distillate, double distilled and aged around six years in oak. Bottled at 40% ABV. Expect a rich amber pour with a bouquet of coffee, chocolate, allspice, cinnamon, and nutmeg carrying onto the palate alongside clove, anise, and caramel, with a long, spicy finish and an agricole-tinged edge from the cane juice component. Reviews genuinely split — some find it a solid, dry sipper, others find vanilla sweetness dominant — but the consensus is that it excels in tiki drinks. A Zombie seems apt.
