Deanston 12 Year Single Malt Scotch
Deanston 12 Year Old comes from one of Scotland's most unusual distilleries: an 18th-century cotton mill on the River Teith in Doune, converted to whisky-making in 1966 and powered by its own hydroelectric turbines. Deanston makes an unpeated Highland malt, and the 12 Year is matured in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 92.6 proof, non-chill-filtered and naturally colored.
It pours pale gold and offers sour apple, waxy candle and buttery pastry on the nose, then a dessert-like palate of baked apple pie, honey, cereal biscuit and syrupy fruit, with an unexpectedly peppery finish that returns to sweet fruit. The Whiskey Wash scored it 8 out of 10 and called it a fine breakfast dram. Full-flavored, honest and fairly priced, it is a great pick for drinkers who like Glenmorangie 10 but want more weight and texture.
