Dewar's Double Double 21 Year Old is master blender Stephanie Macleod's showpiece, made with a four-stage "double double" process: malt and grain whiskies are aged separately, blended and aged again within their own groups, married together for a further rest, then finished in rare Japanese Mizunara oak. Dewar's, founded in Perth in 1846 and built on the Highland malt of Aberfeldy, is one of the world's best-selling blends, and this is its pinnacle.
Bottled at 92 proof, it pours light golden amber with excellent viscosity and offers banana, candied ginger, nutmeg, oats and green apple on the nose, then a remarkably smooth palate of ginger, coconut, dried fig, pear and coriander spice with the sandalwood signature of Mizunara, finishing long, sweet and subtle. The Whiskey Wash scored it 9 out of 10. A luxurious, unusual blend at a fraction of single-malt prices for the same age.
