Don Valente is made at the distillery of Marco Antonio Jáuregui Huerta, NOM 1450, in El Arenal, Jalisco, in the lowlands of the Tequila Valley. The process is traditional throughout: 100% blue Weber agave is slow-cooked in brick ovens, crushed on a roller mill, fermented in stainless steel, and double distilled in copper pot stills, the copper helping to clean up the spirit and round out its texture. The Artesanal bottlings are dressed with an aluminum label hand-painted by Mexican craftsmen. Don Valente's añejo is aged for two years in white oak barrels, twice the legal minimum for the category, and bottled at 40% ABV. The producer describes it as a limited-production tequila with a dark yellow color with golden tones and notes of cooked agave and fine wood. Tasters on Tequila Matchmaker find oak at the center, with an earthy, almost mushroom-like nose, caramel, and black pepper on a finish that lingers. It's a woody, earthy añejo rather than a sweet one, suited to sipping neat or over a large cube, and the hand-painted bottle makes it a natural gift for anyone who appreciates Mexican craft.
