Double Diamond by Schrader Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon
Double Diamond is the second label of Schrader Cellars, the Oakville house Fred Schrader founded in 1998 that has racked up more 100-point scores than nearly any Napa producer. It is made by the same winemaker, Thomas Rivers Brown, who also directs the vineyard work, from Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon blocks that sit just outside the single-vineyard Schrader bottlings. The 2023 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 19 months in French oak, 52% new and 48% second-use Darnajou barrels, and bottled at 14.8% ABV. The winemaker's notes describe black cherry, dark plum, graphite, violets, sweet tobacco and baking spice on the nose, then blackberry, cassis and dark chocolate on a palate built on refined tannins and vibrant acidity, closing on crushed rock and cedar. It drinks like a Schrader wine at a fraction of the price and rewards an hour in the decanter. Pour it with a dry-aged ribeye, lamb chops with rosemary or a wild-mushroom risotto. 750ml bottle.
