Douglas & Todd 4 Year Small Batch Bourbon
Douglas & Todd is a Minnesota bourbon, and the name is a map reference: Douglas and Todd are the two Minnesota counties where the grain is grown and the whiskey is distilled and aged. It's a collaboration between Phillips Distilling Company of Princeton, Minnesota, and Panther Distillery, which Phillips calls the first craft distillery in Minnesota. The mash bill is built on local grain, short-season corn and red winter wheat from farms in those two counties, which makes it a wheated bourbon with a softer, rounder grain profile than a typical rye-forward recipe. It's aged at least four years in handmade oak barrels in northern Minnesota, where, as Phillips CEO Mike Duggan put it, the distillery uses the cold winters and hot summers to its advantage, pushing the whiskey in and out of the wood more aggressively than a mild climate would. It's a small-batch straight bourbon bottled at 93 proof (46.5% ABV). The producer describes it as sweet, smoky and woody, with a hint of fruit and vanilla on the finish. Pour it neat with a splash of water, or build an Old Fashioned or Manhattan with it.
