Durant & Booth Bourbon Barrel Aged Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Durant & Booth is a Napa Valley label from Burgundy-born vintner Jean-Charles Boisset, built around the idea of breaking with tradition, and this bottling does exactly that. Winemaker Thane Knutson, an Oklahoma native, proposed aging Napa Cabernet in used American white oak bourbon barrels instead of the usual French cooperage, and the wine is matured in a combination of new French oak and bourbon barrels that previously held whiskey for about a dozen years. The fruit comes from growers in Calistoga, St. Helena and Rutherford, selected for concentrated, potent Cabernet that can stand up to the barrel. The blend is 96% Cabernet Sauvignon with 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, bottled at 14.5% ABV. The winery describes a deep, nearly opaque purple color with aromas of cherry, blackberry and currant layered with incense and smoked meat, then brown sugar, vanilla, baking spice, caramel and toasted oak on a palate of fine-grained tannins and a long, savory, subtly smoky finish.
