E.H. Taylor Jr. Straight Rye Whiskey Bottled in Bond
Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. was the 19th-century distiller who owned the Old Fashioned Copper Distillery, the site that became today's Buffalo Trace in Frankfort, Kentucky, and who championed the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, the first federal standard guaranteeing American whiskey's authenticity. Buffalo Trace honors him with this Bottled-in-Bond straight rye. Unlike most American ryes, it contains no corn at all: the mash bill is rye and malted barley only, an undisclosed recipe that gives it a spicier, more rye-forward character than rye whiskeys softened with corn. As a bonded whiskey it must be the product of one distillation season and one distiller at a single distillery, aged at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse, and bottled at exactly 100 proof (50% ABV). Breaking Bourbon's review finds toasted oak, rye spice, pepper and subtle mint and pear on the nose, a rich, oily palate moving from rye spice into vanilla, pear, nutmeg and pine, and a finish of cinnamon, nutmeg and anise that starts warm and gently fades. It's excellent neat, and it makes a Manhattan or Sazerac with real backbone.
