Eifel 2021 German Peated Rye Whisky is a rare thing: a peated rye, made in Germany. Eifel Whisky is produced in the volcanic Eifel region of western Germany, and its rye expressions are built around a mash of roughly 90% rye and 10% malted barley, matured in wine casks that reflect the distillery's location near the Mosel and Rhine wine regions.
For the peated edition, Eifel matured the whisky in ex-Bordeaux casks and ex-Laphroaig casks, using barrels from the famously medicinal Islay distillery to layer smoke and a briny, iodine edge over the rye. It is bottled at 46% ABV, uncolored and non-chill filtered, as a 2021 USA edition. The combination of rye spice, wine-cask fruit and Islay peat makes this one of the most unusual whiskies in the store, and a fun bottle for anyone who loves both Sazeracs and smoky Scotch. It is a limited release and a rare find outside of Germany.
