Eifel 2021 German Rye Whisky comes from Eifel Whisky, a small producer in the volcanic Eifel region of western Germany that has quietly built a reputation for rye whisky matured in the wine casks of its neighboring Mosel and Rhine vineyards. The 2021 edition is made from a mash of 90% rye and 10% malted barley and aged more than five years.
The cask program is what sets it apart: two years in ex-Bordeaux casks, two years in second-fill Malaga casks and a final year in first-fill German Pinot Noir casks, before bottling at 46% ABV, uncolored and non-chill filtered. Whiskey In My Wedding Ring rated it 6.7 out of 10, or Very Good, describing crunchy sourdough bread crust, herbs and citrus on the nose, a buttery, olive-oil texture with black pepper and smoky char on the palate, and a finish of lemon marmalade on burnt toast.
