Epoch Reserve Maryland Straight Rye Whiskey is the flagship from Baltimore Spirits Company, the distillery that brought rye whiskey back to Baltimore City after a 75-year absence. Maryland was once the second-largest rye producer in the country, known for a softer, fruitier style than Pennsylvania's, and Epoch is built to revive it. The mash is 100% rye grain with a substantial share of malted rye, open-top fermented and double-distilled on a custom copper pot still modeled after the stills at Lagavulin.
Epoch Reserve is aged more than four years in new charred 53-gallon American oak barrels using two different char levels, and bottled at 100 proof. Drinkhacker rated the Epoch straight rye an A-, finding cinnamon-dusted cherry cookies, baking cocoa and buttery bread dough on the nose, then a creamy, balanced palate of melted chocolate chips, roasted pecan and cherry cordial finishing on hot cocoa. The distillery's own notes call out cherry candy, cedar, ripe tropical fruit and cinnamon. It is one of the best examples of the Maryland style available today.
