Far Niente Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Far Niente has built its Napa Valley reputation on Cabernet Sauvignon since its very first vintage back in 1982, blending fruit from several of the valley's most prestigious sub-appellations — primarily Oakville, with smaller contributions from Oak Knoll, Calistoga, St. Helena, Diamond Mountain, and Stags Leap — into what the winery calls its finest expression of the grape. Each vintage typically runs around 93% Cabernet Sauvignon with small additions of Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot, aged 16 to 17 months in French oak, roughly two-thirds new. It's been consistently well-reviewed by major critics and carries a strong CellarTracker community score in the low 90s. Expect a full-bodied, classically structured Napa Cabernet: black cherry, cassis, and boysenberry fruit layered with baking spice, licorice, dried lavender, and toasted oak, with firm tannins and a long, polished finish built for aging 15 to 20 years in good vintages. Reviews genuinely vary vintage to vintage, as they do with any fine wine — some years draw unreserved praise as classic, elegant expressions of Napa Cabernet, while others have struck tasters as a bit less integrated. A serious, collectible bottle either way, best paired with red meat or a crown roast of lamb.
