Fiero Blanco Habanero Infused Tequila
Fiero is a pepper-infused tequila from Hotaling & Co., the San Francisco spirits company, and the Habanero was the original expression. The base is a blanco tequila from NOM 1437 in the Los Valles region of Jalisco, and the heat comes from real peppers rather than extract: Fiero buys fresh habaneros, never dried or roasted, from local farmers markets in Jalisco, and the peppers are selected, seeded and chopped by hand before going into a proprietary infusion. The aim is a consistent heat level from bottle to bottle, something homemade infusions rarely manage, and habaneros sit at 100,000 to 350,000 Scoville heat units, so this one has genuine bite. The brand describes it as tasting like a bite of a fresh habanero backed with smooth agave, and it is bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof). This is a mixing tequila first. It is the shortcut to a spicy Margarita without muddling peppers, and it adds clean heat to a Paloma, a Bloody Maria or a spicy Ranch Water; a quarter to half ounce alongside your regular blanco is enough to warm a drink without overpowering it. If you want less heat, Fiero also makes a Serrano version.
