Filey Bay Peated Finish Batch #2 is a limited release from the Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery in Hunmanby, the first working whisky distillery in Yorkshire. Founded in 2016 by farmer Tom Mellor with guidance from the late Dr. Jim Swan, the distillery grows all its barley on the family farm and distills every drop on site, a true field-to-bottle English single malt.
Rather than peating its own barley, Filey Bay matures its unpeated malt in ex-bourbon casks, then finishes it in casks that previously held heavily peated whisky, lending a gentle wisp of smoke to its bright, fruity house style. Bottled in a 700mL bottle, Batch #2 offers earthy peat smoke, coastal saltiness and a subtle sweetness on the nose, then heather honey, citrus and soft smoke on a velvety palate, finishing long, smoky, sweet and lightly salty. A rare English take on peated whisky and a collector's batch.
