Firestone Walker 2023 Anniversary Ale XXVII
XXVII is Firestone Walker's 27th Anniversary Ale, released October 26, 2023, from the Paso Robles brewery whose anniversary series dates back to 2006. Every year the brewers hand a lineup of barrel-aged beers to local winemakers and let them compete to build the final blend, and 2023 was the 18th of those blending sessions. The winning blend came from Molly Lonborg of Alta Colina, Kevin Sass of Halter Ranch, and Brewmaster's Collective member Ezekial Palmer. It combines five beers: 33% DDBA Batch 10k from wheated bourbon barrels, 29% Dividing Time from wheated and rye bourbon barrels, 13% Bravo and 13% Rip This Joint from bourbon barrels, and 12% Velvet Merkin, the bourbon-barrel oatmeal stout. The result is an American strong ale at 12.5% ABV in 12 oz bottles. Firestone Walker describes a deep, dark mahogany pour with barrel aromas of toffee and cocoa powder, a smooth, silky body with rich caramel, toasted nut, vanilla and coconut, and a balance between malt, bourbon spirit and chocolate truffle. Brewmaster Matt Brynildson said it was made sparing no expense to celebrate the anniversary, and like every edition it is a one-time blend.
