Firestone Walker 23rd Anniversary Ale, labeled XXIII, is the 2019 edition of the Paso Robles brewery's annual barrel-aged blend, released to mark 23 years on California's Central Coast. Every year Firestone Walker invites local winemakers to blend the brewery's barrel-aged beers and compete for the final recipe; the XXIII winners were Sherman Thacher and Daniel Callan of Thacher Winery with Will Freeman and Phil LaMontagne of TH Estate Wines, taking the title for the second year running. Their blend: 28% Parabola imperial stout and 28% Stickee Monkee quad, both from bourbon barrels, 20% Bravo imperial brown ale, 15% Bourbon Barrel Helldorado blonde barleywine, 5% Velvet Merkin oatmeal stout, and 4% Tequila Barrel Helldorado. It's bottled in 12oz bottles at 11.5% ABV. Brewmaster Matt Brynildson called it super elegant and seamless, and Drinkhacker's review found vanilla custard, chocolate syrup, and sugar cookie on the nose, a hint of smoked agave as it warms, and a surprisingly light palate with crushed-pineapple brightness from the tequila barrels. Serve it just below cellar temperature in a snifter.
