Forefathers Lone Tree Vineyard Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Forefathers is a label from Goldschmidt Vineyards, the Healdsburg family winery of New Zealand-born winemaker Nick Goldschmidt and his wife Yolyn, who after decades leading winemaking for Simi and Allied Domecq launched their own portfolio devoted to site-specific Cabernet. Lone Tree Vineyard is a three-acre, east-facing mountain parcel just north of Geyserville in Alexander Valley; east-facing slopes are rare in the valley, and the soft morning sun and glacial loam soils with strong water-holding capacity allow long hang times without dehydration or runaway sugars. The vines are cane pruned for smaller berries, looser clusters and even ripening. The wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, macerated about 50 days on the skins and aged in French oak, finishing at 14.8% ABV. Goldschmidt describes ripe blackberry and black cherry with pronounced French oak on the nose, juicy red and black fruit, blueberry, cassis and dark chocolate on the palate, smooth supple tannins and a toasty oak finish. James Suckling rated the current release 93 points, noting blackcurrants, blackberries, plum skins, cooking spices and dried herbs with chalky tannins and succulent fruit. Pair this 750ml bottle with roast beef, lamb kebabs or sharp aged cheddar. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
