Forty Creek Barrel Select Canadian Whisky
Forty Creek Barrel Select is the flagship whisky of Forty Creek Distillery in Grimsby, Ontario, the Niagara Peninsula operation founded by winemaker-turned-distiller John Hall, who laid down the brand's first stock in 1992 with a mission to build bolder, more complex Canadian whiskies. Barrel Select was the bottle that set that course, and it is still the backbone of the range. It is a blend of three separate whiskies, corn, malted barley and rye, each aged a minimum of four years in a mix of American white oak and ex-bourbon barrels before they are married together. It is bottled at 40% ABV in a 750ml bottle. Forty Creek describes it as bold with a long, smooth finish and hints of spice, with robust toffee, oak, white pepper and malt spice on the palate. WhiskyCast's review picks up soft spices, pralines, coconut and vanilla on the nose, cinnamon spice and a hint of rye bread on a creamy palate, and a long, warming finish. It is an easy whisky for highballs and a Manhattan, and smooth enough to sip on the rocks at an everyday price.
