Four Gate Majestic Wood Series 'Brazilian Amburana Oak' Bourbon Whiskey
Four Gate Whiskey Company is a Louisville, Kentucky blending house founded in 2018, known for limited, high-proof finished bourbons built around unusual casks, including its long-running Kelvin Collaboration series with Kelvin Cooperage. The Majestic Wood Series was created to showcase rare woods from around the world, and it launched as a pair: this Brazilian Amburana Oak release and a Japanese Mizunara sibling. Both start from the same foundation, a 7-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon, which Four Gate then finishes in casks of the wood in question. Amburana is a dense, aromatic South American hardwood traditionally used to age cachaça in Brazil, and it is famous for how much spice it pushes into a spirit even over a short finish. According to the brand, here it adds vanilla, baking spices like clove and cinnamon, and sweet ginger to the underlying bourbon. The release was bottled at 115.1 proof (57.55% ABV), and only 2,070 bottles were produced, at a launch price of $249. Chief Barrel Officer Bob D'Antoni promised more woods to come in the series, but this first Amburana edition was a single limited batch. Add a few drops of water to open up the spice.
