Four Gate Whiskey Company is a Louisville, Kentucky blending house founded in 2018, known for limited, high-proof finished bourbons built around unusual casks, including its long-running Kelvin Collaboration series with Kelvin Cooperage. The Majestic Wood Series was created to showcase rare woods from around the world, and it launched as a pair: this Japanese Mizunara Oak release and a Brazilian Amburana sibling. Both start from the same foundation, a 7-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon, which Four Gate then finishes in casks of the wood in question. Mizunara is a rare Japanese oak prized by whisky makers and notoriously difficult to work with: its high moisture content means the staves need extended drying before they can be coopered, and the casks are expensive. The payoff is a distinctive aromatic character, and according to the brand the oak lends a sweet sandalwood note to the underlying bourbon. The release was bottled at 117.4 proof (58.7% ABV), and only 1,673 bottles were produced, at a launch price of $249, making it the scarcer of the two. Chief Barrel Officer Bob D'Antoni promised more woods to come, but this first Mizunara edition was a single limited batch.
