The Kelvin Collaboration is the series that launched Four Gate Whiskey Company, the Louisville blending house started in 2018 by Bill Straub and Bob D'Antoni. Their debut release was built with William Hornaday of Kelvin Cooperage, who sourced Spanish sherry barrels that had gone on to age rum in the Caribbean, and the series has returned to that sherry-and-rum idea ever since. Batch 28 is the fifth iteration, The Kelvin Collaboration V. It blends three Kentucky straight bourbons: a 7-year-old and an 8-year-old from a mash bill of 74% corn, 20% rye and 5% malted barley, and a 9-year-old from a mash bill of 78% corn, 10% rye and 12% malted barley. The blend was then finished in two kinds of casks, Australian Mariposa sherry casks and añejo dark rum casks, layering fortified-wine fruit and rum sweetness over the older bourbon. It was bottled at 117 proof (58.5% ABV), with 4,802 bottles produced at a launch price of $199. Four Gate never repeats a batch, a rule Straub set at the start when he promised every release would be a unique combination of whiskey and finish barrels, so once Batch 28 is gone it is gone.
