Frida Kahlo Tequila is named for the Mexican painter and produced in collaboration with her estate by Dorado, Pizzorni & Sons, a Florida-based company founded in 2005. The tequila itself comes from Fábrica de Tequila El Edén in Jesús María, in the southern Los Altos highlands of Jalisco, under NOM 1465 (earlier batches were made at NOM 1079). It is 100% blue Weber agave, slow-cooked in an antique adobe brick oven, then steamed and cooled to take out bitterness before the cooked agave goes through a roller mill. The juice is naturally fermented in stainless steel tanks for up to four days and double distilled in antique copper pot stills. The Añejo is the oldest expression in the range, rested in American oak casks before bottling at 40% ABV (80 proof). The brand's notes describe a damp field, roasted fruit and nectar on the nose, and a palate of butter and a dash of smoke mixed with sweet vanilla, finishing long with baking spices. Tasters at Tequila Matchmaker consistently pick out vanilla, cooked agave and caramel with subtle spice underneath. Sip it neat or over a large cube.
