Frida Kahlo Tequila is named for the Mexican painter and produced in collaboration with her estate by Dorado, Pizzorni & Sons, a Florida-based company founded in 2005. The tequila itself comes from Fábrica de Tequila El Edén in Jesús María, in the southern Los Altos highlands of Jalisco, under NOM 1465 (earlier batches were made at NOM 1079). It is 100% blue Weber agave, slow-cooked in an antique adobe brick oven, then steamed and cooled to take out bitterness before the cooked agave goes through a roller mill. The juice is naturally fermented in stainless steel tanks for up to four days and double distilled in antique copper pot stills. The Reposado is then rested in American oak casks before bottling at 40% ABV (80 proof), long enough to pick up color and wood without covering the highland agave. Reviewers at Tequila Matchmaker describe aromas of cooked agave, black pepper and oak, with oak and cinnamon on the palate, and one taster called out a bourbon-like character that will appeal to whiskey drinkers. Use it in a richer Margarita or a Tequila Old Fashioned, or pour it on the rocks.
