G&W Private Stock 5 Years Aged Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
G&W Private Stock is one of the older names on the American whiskey shelf, with an unusual backstory. The initials stand for Gooderham & Worts, the Canadian distillery that was owned by Hiram Walker; Laird & Company, the New Jersey family firm founded in 1698 in Monmouth County and best known for its applejack and apple brandy, bought the G&W trademark from Hiram Walker in the 1970s and has bottled bourbon under it ever since, buying barrels from an established Kentucky distillery. This 5 Years Aged release is a Kentucky straight bourbon made by the sour mash method from a mash bill of 75% corn, 13% rye and 12% malted barley, aged five years, charcoal and chill filtered, and bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV). Reviewers point to sweet baked-goods character with a dash of spice and a rounded, almost creamy texture on the palate, which is what the extra time over the brand's standard sour mash bottling buys. It's priced like a mixer but carries enough age to hold up neat or over a big cube, and it makes an honest, corn-sweet Old Fashioned or Manhattan without stretching the budget.
