G&W Private Stock Kentucky Sour Mash Bourbon Whiskey
G&W Private Stock Kentucky Sour Mash is the everyday bottling from a brand with a surprisingly long history. G&W stands for Gooderham & Worts, the Canadian distillery that belonged to Hiram Walker; in the 1970s Laird & Company, the New Jersey family distilling house founded in 1698 and known for its applejack and apple brandy, acquired the G&W trademark from Hiram Walker and has bottled it ever since, buying bourbon from a well-established Kentucky distillery. The whiskey is a Kentucky bourbon made by the sour mash method, in which spent mash from a previous run goes into each new fermentation to keep the process consistent. The mash bill is 72% corn, with the remainder split evenly between rye and malted barley, and the bourbon sees a minimum of three years in barrel, with recent batches reported at four years or more. It's bottled at 40% ABV. Published tasting notes describe baked apple pie, white pepper, cloves and nutmeg on the nose, butterscotch, vanilla and soft tannins on the palate, and a finish of vanilla and spice. An easygoing house bourbon for highballs, punches and mixing.
