Gekkeikan Black & Gold is one of the best-known premium sakes in America, brewed at Gekkeikan's Folsom, California, brewery, which the Kyoto company founded in 1989 on Sierra Nevada snowmelt water and California-grown rice to bring its 1637 Fushimi heritage to the United States. Black & Gold is a tokubetsu junmai blend that marries the Folsom Traditional with a selection of premium sakes brewed at the same plant, with no added distilled alcohol and no sulfites, and it is bottled at 14.6% ABV in a matte-black 750ml bottle with the Gekkeikan laurel-crown characters brushed in gold. The brewery describes banana, overripe nectarine, pineapple and mango on the nose with cherry and almond milk behind them, a palate that opens sweet and creamy and turns umami-driven and refreshing, and a long finish of acidity and umami; Drinkhacker found mushroom and melon with a creamy, doughy body and a nutty finish, and it took Grand Gold at the 2024 National Warm Sake Contest in Japan, a rare honor for an American-brewed sake.
