Breaking Bourbon called the 2023 George T. Stagg the king of that year's Antique Collection — fifteen years and three months old, uncut and unfiltered at 135 proof, and remarkably balanced for it. Stagg is the flagship of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection: barrel-proof bourbon from Buffalo Trace's low-rye Mashbill #1, aged around fifteen years, and named for the 1880s owner of the distillery. The 2023 release is from barrels filled in spring 2008 and bottled at 135 proof with nothing added or removed. Breaking Bourbon: blackstrap molasses, dark honey, barrel char, and raisin on a nose that stays balanced despite the proof; barrel char, raisin, graham cracker, baking spice, brown sugar, and aged oak on the palate, the raisin leading; and a chewy finish of dry char, rye spice, dark fruit, light leather, and lingering spice — high proof and long age without aggression.
