Glenfiddich is the big name in Dufftown, Speyside, a distillery that keeps much of its production in its own hands, down to its own cooperage. This special edition takes the familiar 12 Year Old in a sherried direction. The whisky spends twelve years maturing in American and European oak casks, then is finished in Amontillado sherry casks from the Jerez region of Spain. It's bottled at 43% ABV (86 proof). Glenfiddich's own notes give a nose of soft wood, cinnamon and cardamom spice with candied fruit and plums; a deep, sweet palate of juicy baked apples and dried fruit; and a finish of woody spice, candied dried fruit and prune. Whisky Advocate's Jonny McCormick picked up shifting tones of orchard fruit, rich oak, dried fruit and lasting spice, noting that the amontillado casks add sweetness and depth. It's an easy upgrade for anyone who likes the standard 12 and wants more fruit and spice.
