Goldschmidt Vineyards Game Ranch Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon
Nick Goldschmidt, a New Zealand-born winemaker who spent years at Simi and Allied Domecq before launching his own label, owns Goldschmidt Vineyards with his wife Yolyn, and he makes every wine himself. Game Ranch sits on an old river bottom along the eastern bench of the Silverado Trail in Oakville, where deep gravelly soils and afternoon sun produce Cabernet with lush fruit and soft, creamy tannins. The wine is Cabernet Sauvignon aged in French oak and bottled at 14.9% ABV in 750ml. Goldschmidt describes a purple-to-garnet color, a nose of ripe raspberry, cedar, black cherry, plum and creme caramel, and a palate of candied cherry and dark peach that deepens mid-palate into cocoa powder, plum, red earth and vanilla with creamy tannins. James Suckling rated the 2021 93 points for ripe blackberry, cassis, licorice, cedar and pencil shavings with firm, lightly chewy tannins, and Wine Enthusiast also gave it 93, praising a long, mouthwatering finish. Pair it with surf and turf or braised short-rib risotto. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
