Goodwood Brewing is one of Kentucky's longest continuously operating breweries. It has been brewing in Louisville since 1990, starting out as Bluegrass Brewing Company, and it specializes in barrel-aged beers. Its bourbon line finishes whiskey in barrels that have held Goodwood's own beers, and the Walnut Brown Finish, released in December 2022 as the fourth spirit in the range, is built around one of the brewery's flagship beers, its Walnut Brown Ale. The bourbon comes from Green River Distilling in Owensboro, Kentucky: bourbons aged four to eight years in new charred American white oak barrels, which are then finished in barrels that previously held the Walnut Brown Ale. It's bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV). Goodwood describes notes of toffee, biscuit and oak with a nutty finish. Breaking Bourbon's review found a clear beer-barrel influence: brown ale, marshmallow, brown sugar and light mixed nuts on the nose; light rye spice, caramel chew, vanilla cream and a touch of milk chocolate on the palate; and a finish of rye spice, oak and faint nuts. Their verdict was a really good beer-barrel-finished bourbon with a pleasing sweet midpoint, an easy pick for anyone who likes their bourbon on the nutty, malty side.
