Goose Island Bourbon County Backyard Stout 2023
Bourbon County Stout is Goose Island's bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout, first brewed in Chicago in 1992 and released every Black Friday with a handful of variants alongside the original. Backyard Stout for 2023 came out of the Bourbon County vault: in 2013 Goose Island released Backyard Rye, made with mulberries that senior innovation manager Mike Siegel picked by hand from trees steps away from the Goose Island Barrel House in Chicago. Inspired by that beer and by his own childhood memories of picking fruit, Siegel built this version on the stout instead. The imperial stout was aged in bourbon barrels for at least one year, then finished and blended with three fruits, mulberries, boysenberries and marionberries, each chosen for a different job, some adding sweetness and others acidity and complexity. It's bottled at 12.9% ABV and was released nationwide in select markets. Goose Island describes it as a balanced and nuanced play on fresh fruit, vanilla and chocolate, the berries cutting through the richness of the barrel-aged base rather than burying it. Pour it into a snifter and let it come up a few degrees from fridge temperature so the fruit and the barrel can both show. Contains wheat.
