Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout 2021
Bourbon County Brand Stout is the original: the imperial stout Goose Island brewmaster Greg Hall first aged in bourbon barrels in Chicago in 1992, the beer generally credited with starting the bourbon barrel-aged stout category. Every year Goose Island brews it to Hall's original recipe and releases it on Black Friday, and the 2021 vintage follows that recipe closely. The stout was aged for 8 to 14 months in freshly emptied bourbon barrels from three Kentucky distilleries, Heaven Hill, Wild Turkey and Buffalo Trace, then blended across those barrels for balance. Hops are Millennium, and it was released at 14% ABV in 16.9-ounce bottles (a 14.4% version also exists for some markets), nationwide in select markets. Goose Island's description of the 2021 is flavors of chocolate and vanilla, oak, whiskey and molasses, followed by caramel, berry fruit and almond; its short-form notes are vanilla, dark fruit and almond. Big imperial stouts like this are built to age, and a few years in the bottle tends to round the heat and push the dark-fruit and almond side forward. Pour into a snifter, let it warm slowly from cellar temperature, and share it or sip it over an evening. Contains wheat.
