Grand Marnier Cuvée Louis Alexandre
Cuvée Louis Alexandre is the Cognac-forward take on Grand Marnier, made by Marnier-Lapostolle and named for Louis-Alexandre Marnier Lapostolle, who created Grand Marnier in 1880 by blending Cognac with bitter orange. He was known for adding a drop of old Cognac to his own glass, and the house first released this cuvée in 1977 as a tribute to that habit. Where the classic red-ribbon Grand Marnier is built on a younger Cognac base, Louis Alexandre uses VSOP Cognacs aged in Tronçais oak by the house's master blender in the heart of Cognac, then marries them with the distilled essence of bitter oranges. It's bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof). Grand Marnier describes a warm amber color with copper and orange tints, a nose of candied orange with citrus zest, orange and bergamot essences, and a palate of candied orange and macerated citrus fruit softened by oak and a touch of vanilla, finishing very long with the Cognac out front. It's rich enough to sip neat or on a large cube after dinner, and it makes a deeper, more Cognac-driven Sidecar or Grand Margarita than the standard bottle.
