Green River Wheated Bourbon
Green River Distilling has been making whiskey in Owensboro, Kentucky since 1885, making it the state's 10th-oldest licensed distillery — and in October 2025, its Wheated Bourbon pulled off one of the biggest upsets in recent bourbon history. Blind-tasted against more than 100 contenders at the New York World Spirits Competition, including Blanton's Gold Edition and W.L. Weller Full Proof, this roughly $35 bottle was named Best Overall Bourbon in the World, beating out competitors that regularly sell for $1,000 or more on the secondary market. It's built from a 70% corn, 21% wheat, 9% malted barley mash bill, blending barrels aged 4 to 6 years, matured in the distillery's distinctive clay tile warehouses that hold heat longer than typical rickhouses, contributing to its fruit-forward character. Bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV). The judging panel praised a peach and caramel aroma accented by apricot and cinnamon, moving into toffee, pastry, and hazelnut on the palate, finishing smooth, honeyed, and balanced. Master Blender Dan Callaway of Lofted Spirits called it a bourbon that stays true to Kentucky tradition while bringing something distinctly its own. A genuinely remarkable value at this price point.
