Hamilton Demerara 151 Overproof Rum
This bottle exists because of a shortage. Lemon Hart 151 — a bar fixture predating the tiki craze — kept vanishing from the market through the late 2000s and 2010s, and Ed Hamilton, founder of the Ministry of Rum and author of Rums of the Eastern Caribbean, decided to fill the gap himself. Launched in 2015, it's distilled and aged up to five years at Demerara Distillers Limited in Guyana — a blend of pot and continuous still rums, including wooden still distillate — imported in bulk at 77% ABV and reduced with filtered well water in Westfield, New York to exactly 151 proof (75.5% ABV). Expect rich molasses, burnt sugar, treacle, and brown butter on the nose, opening into toffee, chocolate, caramel, banana, and cocoa with pronounced smoky, toasted character, finishing long and spicy with cinnamon, tobacco, and butterscotch. The Lone Caner called it revelatory, redefining what a 151 could be — "a semi-civilized, tux-clad thug" rather than a back-alley palate-mugger. It's built as a tiki weapon: the float on a Zombie, Rum Runner, or Jet Pilot, and indispensable anywhere a recipe calls for overproof. Genuinely sippable with an ice cube, which is rare at this strength.
