Hanzell is one of California's historic Pinot Noir estates, and this bottling is grown on its home vineyard in the Sonoma Valley, where the oldest blocks were planted in 1953. The vineyard is certified organic and sits on red clay-loam soils in the Moon Mountain area. In recent vintages the winemaking has included a long cold soak, a portion of whole clusters, and roughly ten months in French oak with about a quarter of it new. Bottled at 13.2% alcohol, it is a cool, structured, Burgundy-leaning style rather than a big fruit bomb. Critics have pointed to damson plum, black cherry and strawberry with vanilla and savory accents, backed by medium tannins and a fresh, balanced finish. It rewards a little time in the cellar but drinks well with a short decant. Serve it with roast duck, mushroom dishes or grilled salmon. A natural fit for collectors who value restraint and a long track record in Sonoma Valley. 750ml bottle. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
