Herzog Special Reserve Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is the Napa expression of the Herzog family's top appellation tier, made at Herzog Wine Cellars in Oxnard by longtime head winemaker Joe Hurliman. The Herzog family has been making wine since the 1840s in what is now Slovakia, where Philip Herzog supplied the Austro-Hungarian court, and after fleeing Europe in 1948 Eugene Herzog rebuilt the business in New York before the family opened its California winery in 1985. For the Special Reserve, Hurliman sources Cabernet Sauvignon from select Napa Valley vineyards and ages the wine for 23 months in small oak barrels, a long regime that builds the vanilla, spice and cedar framework around the fruit. The result is a classic, full-bodied Napa Cabernet with complex layers of blackberry, plum, black cherry and cassis, velvety tannins, a hint of baking spice and a long, smooth finish, at about 14.5% ABV. It is kosher for Passover and mevushal, making it one of the most respected kosher Napa Cabernets on the market. Pair it with roast beef, lamb chops or a well-aged steak.
