Hess Shirtail Ranches California Cabernet Sauvignon
The Hess Collection was founded in 1978 when Swiss entrepreneur Donald Hess planted vineyards high on Mount Veeder and restored the historic Christian Brothers winery on Redwood Road; today the family business operates as Hess Persson Estates and its estate vineyards are certified sustainable by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance. Shirtail Ranches is the Hess team's value-priced Cabernet Sauvignon, named for the Lake County and North Coast ranches that have long supplied its fruit, and the current release carries a broader California appellation. Winemaking follows the Hess house style: fully ripe fruit, a cool fermentation and roughly a year and a half in a mix of French and American oak barrels for light toast and spice. At 13.5% ABV it is full-bodied but restrained, with dense ripe blackberry, dark chocolate and black cherry flavors coating the palate over moderate, smooth tannins and a velvety finish. It is a straightforward, crowd-pleasing Cabernet for burgers, tri-tip, pizza night or a weeknight pasta with red sauce. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release. 750ml bottle.
