Hilary Goldschmidt is the single-site Oakville label from Goldschmidt Vineyards, the family winery of New Zealand-born winemaker Nick Goldschmidt and his wife Yolyn, named for their daughter. The fruit comes from Charming Creek, a block of the Game Ranch vineyard on the eastern side of Oakville at about 700 feet, planted in 1989 to Cabernet clones 337 and 4 on volcanic, clay and gravelly loam soils and cropped at a modest 3.2 tons per acre. The wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 18 months in Demptos French oak, 85% new, and bottled unfined and unfiltered at 14.7% ABV. Nick describes aromas of blueberry, black cherry, plum and a hint of rose petal, a lush, creamy entry that tightens with mineral tension, and fine-grained tannins carrying blackberry, black fig, cassis, cocoa and subtle herbs into a dark-chocolate finish: powerful yet elegant, classic Oakville with presence and poise, with 15-plus years of cellar life.
