Hinch Ninth Wave Irish Gin comes from Hinch Distillery on the Killaney Estate in County Down, Northern Ireland, a whiskey-and-gin distillery unveiled in 2019. The name comes from Irish mythology: the ninth wave is the biggest in a series, and beyond it lies the otherworld of the sea god Manannán mac Lir. It is bottled at 43% ABV (86 proof) with an emphasis on locally sourced botanicals.
GreatDrams found lots of fruit on the nose with citrus, sweet vanilla and a hint of grass alongside juniper and pine, then a smooth, soft palate of summer berries, prominent vanilla and juniper with a slightly bitter edge balanced by crisp citrus, and a finish that bites and lingers with a little vanilla. It is a friendly, modern Irish gin that works in a G&T with a strawberry or a twist of grapefruit, and it is soft enough to sip over ice.
