HJ Notaris Bartender's Choice Genever is Herman Jansen's higher-proof expression designed for the cocktail bar, bottled at 47% ABV (94 proof). Herman Jansen has distilled in Schiedam, the Netherlands, since 1777 and is still family-owned seven generations on. This genever is grainy and malty with generous fruit, from apple and pear to citrus, and a long, satisfying finish.
The Beverage Testing Institute awarded it 93 points and a Gold Medal, noting brown-buttered walnuts, cake dough and suede on the nose, then raisin, fig, bran muffin, caraway, dried fruit and sweet tobacco on the palate, and summed it up as "a nicely layered genever that will provide complexity in cocktails." The extra strength means it holds its shape in a Martinez, a Collins or a genever Negroni, and it is equally good served ice-cold and neat in a tulip glass.
