HJ Notaris Bartender's Choice Rome Edition Genever is a special barrel-aged bottling from Herman Jansen, the seventh-generation family distillery that has operated in Schiedam, the Netherlands, since 1777. Bottled at 47% ABV (94 proof), it is a beer-like, yeasty genever with woody aromas, apple peel, quince, grapefruit, dark chocolate and vanilla, finishing tight and long.
The Beverage Testing Institute scored it 89 points and a Silver Medal, picking up vanilla toffee, buttery dark-roasted nuts, cedar and whisky barrel on the nose, then cashew, raisin bran, spiced nuts, dates and cola on the palate, and called it "a rock solid aged genever that will be versatile." The oak influence pushes it toward whiskey territory, so it excels in stirred drinks like a genever Manhattan or Old Fashioned, while the malty base keeps it distinctly Dutch.
