Isaac Bowman is a port-finished bourbon from A. Smith Bowman Distillery in Fredericksburg, Virginia, founded in 1935 and the oldest distillery in the state. The bottle is named for Captain Isaac Bowman, a soldier and militia officer in the American Revolutionary War who settled at the Fort Bowman estate in northern Virginia in the late 1700s, and the recipe was created by Master Distiller Brian Prewitt. It was modeled on the distillery's experimental port-finished bourbon that was named World's Best Bourbon in 2016. The process starts with Bowman's bourbon aged in American white oak, then finished for roughly three to six months, depending on the cask, in barrels that previously aged port wine, sourced from Portugal and from across Virginia. It's bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV). The distillery describes deep wood tannins, caramel and spice combined with jam-like fruit, and Drinkhacker, which graded it an A, found a chocolatey, raisin-heavy nose with caramel corn and mint, and a palate of mint and chocolate with clove, honey and an amaro-like bitterness on the finish. Sip it neat, or use it in a Manhattan.
