JAJA Añejo Tequila

JAJA Añejo is the longest-aged tequila in the JAJA line, the brand founded in 2018 by brothers Elliot and Maurice Tebele, creators of one of Instagram's biggest comedy accounts, and their childhood friend Martin Hoffstein, with a name that is simply Spanish for haha. Since the brand's 2021 partnership with Proximo Spirits it has been produced at La Rojeña, NOM 1122, one of the oldest working distilleries in tequila. It is made in small batches from 100 percent blue Weber agave, with the piñas slow-cooked for roughly three days in brick ovens, fermented with water and yeast, and distilled three times in copper pot stills before resting more than twelve months in oak barrels and bottling at 40% ABV, 80 proof. The barrel time gives it a deep amber color and a nose of brown sugar, vanilla and caramel with a thread of herbal agave and black pepper underneath; the palate is smooth and rounded with no bitterness, and reviewers note that on ice or in a cocktail the agave, pepper and a lemon-citrus edge come back forward. It is a gentle, approachable añejo that makes a rich añejo margarita or old fashioned and sips easily neat.
