It honors James Ownby, the fifth-generation great-grandfather of Ole Smoky founder Joe Baker, a Revolutionary War soldier who served with the Overmountain Men, the frontier militia from the Appalachian backcountry. Released in 2021, the Reserve is a Tennessee straight bourbon made in small batches drawn from fewer than 200 barrels. Like Tennessee whiskey, the new make is filtered through sugar maple charcoal using the Lincoln County Process before it goes into new charred American oak barrels, a step that softens the spirit before aging. It is bottled at 94 proof. The label carries the three stars of the Tennessee state flag, representing the state's three grand divisions, along with Joe Baker's signature, and it marks Ole Smoky's move from moonshine and flavored whiskeys into aged, straight whiskey.
